Black Cat Bones- Book of Miriam
R550,00
With Book of Miriam, The Black Cat Bones set forth on a journey of sonic exploration that starts off somewhat bumpy but that finds its groove soon enough – and ultimately paints a complex but ultimately hopeful picture of the world.
The opening couple of tracks, “Lungs” and “When I See You”, see the band dive head-first into the world of soul-funk with compositions that are as tight as can be, although the vocals somehow fall just short of matching the energy.
Come “Hemmingway”, though, and things get back on track with a tender, soaring ode to the carefree tendencies of love. Following on from that is a cover of Miriam Makeba’s “Quit It” that takes the original’s pleading melancholy and energises its message of breaking free from addiction with an infectious funk groove and gruff pragmatism.
The closing track “Mayo” perhaps best captures the album’s essence as it tackles the seriousness of the COVID circus with a borderline unhinged and impossible-not-to-enjoy energy which caps off an album that faces up to life’s heaviness with confidence and swagger. Mint.
