The title says it all: Greatest Remixes rounds up 15 mixes of Good Charlotte songs, some done by dance or R&B remixers, some done by Patrick Stump and the Academy Is, all packaged in a sleeve bearing Damien Hirst‘s diamond-encrusted skull with no apparent irony. Surely, the 15 tracks that comprise Greatest Remixes are glitzy and gaudy, never quite realizing just how tasteless they are. Lazy, loping reggae beats slide into focus, giving way to fuzzy glam-metal guitars, thumping low-riding hip-hop beats, helium voices, white-boy raps through a megaphone — all manners of affectations that are meant to sound good in a club but feel stiffly slick, better suited for a TV cop show than a real club. And maybe that’s appropriate, with Joel Madden cameoing on Dirty Sexy Money and seen more often in tabloids as Nicole Richie’s better half than he is on MTV: Good Charlotte are now playing the part of Hollywood rock stars, and this remix album, more than their proper albums, fits their status to a T.
